Liškiava

Liskiava ( German, 18th Century: Lischkau ) is a village ( kaima ) in the municipal part of Merkinė Rajongemeinde Varėna in the south of Lithuania, located on the left bank of the river Nemunas ( Memel dt ) in the National Park Dzūkija. It has 37 inhabitants ( 2005).

In Liskiava several archaeological sites are known, including a Castle Hill Piliakalnis and a place of worship Alkakalnis.

On the castle hill are the 1704 to 1720 built church of the Holy Trinity and a Dominican monastery. In the Church there are seven altars from the Rococo period.

History

Liskiava was first mentioned in 1044. The village belonged from 1795 (Third Partition of Poland ) to 1807 ( Treaty of Tilsit ) under the name Liszkowo ( Polish) to East Prussia and was the easternmost municipality that each belonged to Prussia.
