Lissos

Lisos (also Lissus; Greek Λισός, in writers also Λισσός, latin Lissus, in the Tabula Peutingeriana Liso ) was an ancient city on the southern coast of Crete, between the present towns in the west of Paleochora and Soughia in the east.

The city is mentioned in written sources only since the 3rd century, was, according to archaeological remains but inhabited since the Classical period. In the late 4th and 3rd century was Lisos member and probably the capital of an alliance with the neighboring cities Tarrha, Poikilasion, Elyros, Hyrtakina, Syia and other smaller towns. The Alliance, the " Oreioi " called himself, was 280-250 BC with Magas, king of Cyrene allied. 221/220 BC fought the Oreioi in Lyktischen war against Knossos. Probably not until the 9th century AD Lisos was a bishopric.

In the resort, which is accessible only by sea and hiking trails, there are remains of a Asklepieion with mosaics, an aqueduct and Roman spas have received. In addition, a theater, and the remains of early Christian basilicas have been discovered. In Lisos also a large amount of sculptures were found, representing mainly the deities Asclepius or Hygieia.
