List of Danish High Commissioners in the Faroe Islands

The Danish Reichsombudsschaft in the Faroe Islands ( Faroese: Ríkisumboðið í Føroyum, Danish: Rigsombudet på Færøerne ) is also called the Danish High Commissioner in the Faroe Islands. It is the mission of the Kingdom of Denmark on the largely autonomous islands in the North Atlantic.

The Office of the Ombudsman Empire ( ríkisumboðsmaðurin, rigsombudsmanden ) was introduced by the Faroese Home Rule Act 1948 and replaced the governor of the Faroe Islands, the amtmaður. The Reichsombudsschaft conducted since August 1, 2005 by Empire Ombudsman Søren Christensen, who has his headquarters in the capital Tórshavn.

Tasks and competences

The Reichsombudsschaft comes under the Danish Ministry ( comparable to the German Federal Chancellery).

The Empire Ombudsman is the mediator between the Danish State and the Løgting with the Faroese government autonomy. He has a seat in Løgting, but only in an advisory capacity, so no voting rights. All Faroese laws and other regulations must be to his attention. Conversely, it ensures that Danish law is implemented in the areas where Denmark pauses sovereignty. That is, for example, family law and the police.

The Empire ombudsman is also returning officer in the Faroe Islands in elections to the Danish Folketing and possible referendums on imperial level. The practical conduct of elections is in the hands of the Faroese communities.

Authorities

Under administrative Denmark are on the Faroe Islands the following institutions:

  • Secretariat of the kingdom Ombudsman
  • Legal
  • Landfúti ( bailiff ) and police
  • 6 Sýslumenn (Representative in the traditional Faroese regions, based in the local police stations )
  • Military ( Færøernes command of the Danish army)
  • Medical officer

In addition, the Reichsombudsschaft reports to the Ministry of State current political and economic developments in the archipelago.

One of the " seven Faroese Wunder"

To Ólavsøka 2007, the Faroese television Sjónvarp Føroya organized a national competition over the "seven Faroese Wunder" in which the audience could make any suggestions about particular buildings and other objects. A ranking of the eight winners (due to a tie, in one case) has not been announced, but the seat of Reichsombudsschaft in the Faroe Islands, the old Amtmansborgin, is one of them. The others are the pews of Kirkjubøur, the Magnus Cathedral, the Christianskirkjan in Klaksvík house of the north, Tinganes, the Norðoyatunnilin and the first flag of the Faroe Islands in the Church of Fámjin ( a tie, with the seat of Reichsombudsschaft ).
