List of High Commissioners of the United Kingdom to South Africa

The British High Commissioner for South Africa represents the interests of the British Government in South Africa. From the creation of the post from 1847 to 1901, he served as governor of the colonial government in Cape Colony, and later in the protectorates Basutoland, Bechuanaland and Swaziland, as well as the diplomatic relations with the independent neighboring states. From 1901 to 1910 he served simultaneously as Administrator or Governor of the annexed Boer republics of Transvaal and Orange Free State. From the founding of the Union of South Africa from 1910 to the Statute of Westminster 1931, the office was linked to that of the Governor-General, then the status changed to that of an ambassador. From 1961 to 1994, when the Republic of South Africa was retired from the Commonwealth of Nations, the item is labeled as such. The High Commissioner is currently accredited in South Africa, Swaziland and Lesotho and is based in Pretoria.
