List of mayors of Toronto

This list outlines the mayor of Toronto, the largest city in Canada.

Shortly after the change of town name of " York " on "Toronto" on March 6, 1834 - to be able to better distinguish New York City can - the town was granted on 27 March of the same year its first mayor William Lyon Mackenzie ( 1795-1861 ). Mackenzie was not elected directly by the citizens but appointed by the Council ( City Council). As a result, this happened to 1857 and later from 1867 to 1874.

Since 1953, Toronto is part of the so-called Metropolitan Toronto. This region had the same boundaries as the current Toronto, originally consisted of 13 cities and towns that had their own mayor and council. From 1953 to 1997 Metropolitan Toronto had in addition to the Mayor of Toronto its own chairman (Chairman of the Municipality of Metropolitan Toronto ).

Since 1 January 1998, the Metropolitan Toronto merged together with the areas North York, Scarborough, Etobicoke, York and East York, who henceforth shall be deemed parts of Toronto. So there since that date, no more Regional Government, chaired by the Chairman of the Municipality of Metropolitan Toronto had. The Mayor of Toronto is chairman of the municipal government of Toronto City Council, as well as a chamber of 44 city councils. For these rows a Vice Mayor ( Deputy Mayor ) is selected.
