List of Ministers-President of Bavaria

According to Section 4 of the first main part of the Constitution of the Free State of Bavaria is the Bavarian Prime Minister, the Chairman of the Bavarian government. Current incumbent is Horst Seehofer, CSU. He was elected on 27 October 2008.

Election and resignation

The Prime Minister is the Bavarian State Parliament, which shall meet not later than 22 days after his election (this period is considered since the referendum of 21 September 2003), chosen within one week of its constitutive meeting for a term of five years by secret ballot. Selectable is everyone entitled to vote Bayer, provided that he has completed the age of 40. The Prime Minister can not be deducted from parliament. However, the Constitution prescribes resign if a trusting relationship with the Diet due to political circumstances can no longer possible ( Article 44 paragraph 3 Bavarian Constitution). If he does not, he can be indicted by the Bavarian Constitutional Court.

Tasks

The Prime Minister directs the affairs of the State Government. He appoints and dismisses the approval of the parliament 's deputy and a maximum of 17 State Ministers and State Secretaries which he assigns divisions or special tasks. According to Article 50 of the State Constitution, the Prime Minister may take one or more business areas themselves. With him is the political policy-making powers and he represents Bavaria outward. In his work he is responsible to the parliament. The Prime Minister may exercise a right of pardon.

The Prime Minister supports the Bavarian State Chancellery in its constitutional responsibilities.

History of the Office

Forerunner of the Office of the Prime Minister was the Privy Council Chancellor of the Electorate of Bavaria. From the end of the 18th century primacy took the Minister of Foreign Affairs, from 1806 Minister of the Royal Household and of Foreign, usually a. After the establishment of a Council of Ministers in 1847 moved the chair between the ministers.
