List of obelisks in Rome

Rome is the city with the most ancient obelisks and is therefore also called the city of the obelisk. Eight ancient Egyptian and five ancient Roman obelisks are situated in the city area, another is rumored suspects near the San Louis of the French Church.

The obelisks were mostly brought from the Roman emperors from Egypt to Rome, some made ​​directly to Rome. Of the popes they were re- erected and placed at new locations. Some of them should serve as a guide for pilgrims, such as in front of the Lateran or near Santa Maria Maggiore.

A special position is occupied by the created in the 20th century Mussolini obelisk of Mussolini on the Foro Mussolini (now Foro Italico ) was inaugurated on 4 November 1932. By the year 2005, there stood an ancient Ethiopian stele in the city.
