List of postal codes in Iceland

The postal codes in Iceland have three digits numeric. From them one can read off the approximate geographic location and whether it is an intra - or extra- local extra - ZIP or a mailbox postcode. They are preceded in Iceland, as in most European countries, the location of the post office. You start in the southwest and follow the coastline roughly clockwise.

The following postcode groups are awarded:

From Postcode 170 applies to the third digit of the zip code, the general rule:

  • For post offices and delivery areas within towns the zip code ends in 0 or 5
  • For associated delivery areas out of town the ZIP ends in 1 (or 6 if in town 5 ) ( dreifbýli )
  • Mailboxes receive a zip code with 2 last.
  • If necessary, other delivery areas will be added.

Example Akureyri

As a comprehensive example, the town of Akureyri can apply:

  • 600 Akureyri ( delivery Old Town, south of the river Glerá )
  • 601 Akureyri ( scattered settlements in the fjord Eyjafjörður )
  • 602 Akureyri ( mailboxes)
  • 603 Akureyri ( north of the river Glerá delivery )

In the urban area for the delivery of the postal code are thus 600 and 603 awarded, while the surrounding scattered settlements perform all the ZIP 601.
