List of works by Leonardo da Vinci

Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) was one of the leading artists of the Renaissance.

The estate

The number of preserved paintings of Leonardo da Vinci is low. Currently it will only fifteen paintings preserved, whole or in part, be attributed. The dating of the works is often uncertain. Most of them are as an oil painting on wood as an image carrier. But will get is also the mural in the refectory of the monastery of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan: "The Last Supper ".

The attribution of additional images is controversial. Some are lost and indicate their former existence today only witness reports out copies of contemporary artists, and Leonardo's studies and designs in preparation for the painting. It assumes, however, that no more than a handful of works that are exclusively or mostly by himself, have been lost. And of those paintings that are now regarded as major works of Leonardo, he seems to have never been five or six, including the " Mona Lisa" from her hands.

The most recent example of a hitherto controversial attribution is the portrait of " La Bella Principessa ". In 2009, the British art historian Martin Kemp caused a stir with the Neuzuschreibung of the painting. Kemp justified the attribution of the "Bella Principessa " by forensic investigation methods. It would be the first discovery of a previously unknown Leonardo plant for 100 years.

The small number of paintings is often explained by the slow operation of Leonardo and his almost chronic habit of always delaying the completion of the works. It is sometimes subordinate to him, he had been unable to get projects started to completion. On the other hand, one suspects that he was not instructed as imaginative and inventive engineering technologist forward to contesting his income from the manufacture and sale of works of art.

Nevertheless, the few works of Leonardo, were, together with his notebooks, sketches, drawings and scientific treatises, groundbreaking for later generations of artists.

The workshop Leonardo

His artistic training was Leonardo, about 1470 to 1477, as a pupil of the painter and sculptor Andrea del Verrocchio ( 1435/36-1488 ) in Florence. Some paintings Verrocchio from this period, as Tobias and the Angel ( dated around 1470 to 1475 ) and The Baptism of Christ ( dated around 1472 to 1475 ), an investment is attributed to Leonardo.

From about 1477 led Leonardo da Vinci in Florence own studio. In Milan, where he worked from 1482, he founded at the end of the 1480s a workshop ( Italian: bottega ), in which he trained pupils and journeymen employed, but also craftsmen, such as the metallurgists and paint mixer Tommaso Masini. From 1490 /92, the workshop was located in the " Corte Vecchia " (Italian for Old Palace ), at the site of the present Palazzo Reale, in the south of the Piazza del Duomo. Giovanni Antonio Boltraffio (1467-1516), Cesare da Sesto (1477-1523) and Marco d' Oggiono - from artists such as Ambrogio de Predis their were ( according to 1508 to 1455 ) ( 1475 - 1530 ) produced.

It is reported that the companions carried out the orders of the Master according to its instructions and Leonardo occasionally even docked hand. In later times it was quite common that the Master also signed the work of his employees. However, the artists of the 15th and 16th centuries rarely sign their work. From Leonardo's paintings and those that emerged demonstrated in his workshop, bears no signature.
