Listed building

As Statutory List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest official lists of monuments in the UK are referred to. Depending on the region are different legal basis, competent organization and classification.

England and Wales

The statutory basis for the preservation of the Planning ( Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas ) Act 1990. In England, English Heritage for the recording of buildings is responsible to the list, in Wales it is Cadw. The classification is done according to the following scheme:

Grade I: buildings of exceptional, partly international importance. (English: Grade I buildings are of exceptional interest, sometimes Considered to be internationally important. )

Grade II *: particularly important buildings of general interest. (English: Grade II * buildings are particularly important buildings of more than special interest. )

Grade II: buildings of national importance and special interest. (English: Grade II buildings are nationally important and of special interest. )

In England, 2.5% of the buildings on the Statutory List as a Grade I, 5.5% are classified as Grade II Grade II * and the remaining 92%.

Scotland

Legal basis is the Planning ( Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) ( Scotland) Act 1997, the monument list is maintained by Historic Scotland and distinguishes the following categories.:

Category A: buildings of national or international significance due to their architecture or history, or beautiful and little altered examples of a particular period, style or building type. (English: Buildings of national or international, importance, Either architectural or historic, or fine little -altered examples of some Particular period, style or building type. )

Category B: Buildings of regional or more than local importance, or major examples of a particular period, style or building type, even if they have been changed. (English: Buildings of regional or more than local, importance, or major examples of some Particular period, style or building type Which june havebeen altered. )

Category C (S): Buildings of local importance, less valuable examples of any period, style or building types, preserved in their original or changed only slightly; and simple, traditional buildings which blend well in an ensemble with other structures of categories A and B. (English: Buildings of local, importance, lesser examples of any period, style, or building type, as originally constructed- or moderately altered; and simple traditional buildings Which group well with others in categories A and B.)

Approximately 8% of all listed buildings in Scotland are classified in category A, about 51 % in category B and the remaining approximately 41% in category C (S).

Northern Ireland

Legal basis is The Planning ( Northern Ireland) Order 1991, the monument list prepared by the Northern Ireland Environment Agency and classified the buildings as follows.:

Grade A: buildings of national importance, including both outstanding large buildings as well as good small, little altered examples of an important style or era. (English: . Buildings of national, importance including Both outstanding grand buildings and the fine, little altered example of some important style or date)

Grade B : Structures that can not be classified as Grade A only because of comparatively small defects such as weaknesses in the design or additions or changes of inferior quality. In addition, buildings that are due to their exceptional interior design or other properties on the broad masses of Grade B buildings. (English: . buildings did mighthave merited A status but for Relatively minor detracting features: such as Impurities of design, or lower quality additions or alterations So buildings did stand out above the general mass of grade B1 buildings Because of exceptional interiors or someother features. )

Grade B1 and grade B2: Buildings of local importance or good examples of a particular period or style. A degree of change or imperfection is acceptable. (English: .. Buildings of local, importance or good examples of some period of style Some degree of alteration or imperfection 'may be acceptable )
