The Roll Wing Holzeule ( Xylena ( Lithomoia ) solidaginis ), also known as White Grey Moderholzeule, is a butterfly (moth ) from the family of cutworms ( Noctuidae ).

Features

Butterfly

With a wingspan 41-54 mm is in the rolling wing Holzeule a medium sized cutworms. The fore wings are narrow and long. Their basic color varies from white gray to blue-gray to gray -brown. The kidneys are large and whitish stain filled, the ring flaw, however, are small. The midfield is mostly obscured. Near the hem formed from a black arrow marks W - characters can be seen. The hind wings are gray-brown without markings, the hem slightly darkened. The proboscis of the moths is well developed. The antennae of the males are slightly serrated.

Egg, caterpillar and chrysalis

The spherical egg has a greatly flattened base, is easy to bend inward, ribbed clear wavy and reddish gray.

Adults caterpillars are brownish in color and show broad yellow stripes. They also have a yellow stippling and a thin, broken, yellow-white dorsal line, which is framed by dark brown spots.

The slim doll is equipped on the cremaster with fine spines.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The distribution of the rolling wing Holzeule extends through most of Europe, eastwards to the Urals and to Kamchatka and Japan. In the Alps, it rises to around 1500 meters. It is mainly found on moorlands, in moist mixed forests and tundra and taiga areas.

Way of life

The moths fly univoltine August to November. At rest, they roll the wings to the body. Thus they resemble a piece of bark or a broken branch and are well protected from predators. They are nocturnal and fly to artificial light sources, like also applied bait. The caterpillars live from May to July. They feed polyphagous of a variety of plants, one of which is mentioned here only a selection:

  • Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus),
  • Bog bilberry (Vaccinium uliginosum ),
  • Lingonberry (Vaccinium vitis -idea )
  • Labrador tea (Rhododendron tomentosum )
  • Heather ( Calluna vulgaris),
  • Species of willow ( Salix),
  • Birch species ( Betula )

And others. Pupation takes place in a hole in the ground. The species overwinters in the egg stage.

Endangering

In Germany, the rolling wing Holzeule is common, but rarely as area and is on the Red List of endangered species in category 3 ( endangered) classified, in Baden- Württemberg it appears on the early warning list.
