The Little Muskingum River is a 105 km long right tributary of the Ohio River in eastern Ohio in the foothills of the Appalachians. The outflow is via the Ohio River and Mississippi River into the Gulf of Mexico. The Little Muskingum River is part of the river system of the Mississippi River and drains an area of 816 km ². The river rises in the mountainous part of the Monroe County about 13 km southeast of the village of Woodsfield and flows in a meandering 13 km away and parallel to the Ohio River until it empties 8 km southeast of the city of Marietta in Ohio. Almost the entire course of the river Little Muskingum River is within the Wayne National Forest, which was renatured in a former coal mining area. The area consists of three parts totaling about 34 square kilometers in extent.
