Liu Bannong

Liu Bannong (刘半农) (* 1891 in the province of Jiangsu, † 1934 in Beijing), Liu Fu (刘 复), was a Chinese linguist and poet, translator and literary critic.

Life

Liu Bannong was born in 1891 in Jiangsu Province. From 1912 he lived in Shanghai, 1917, he went to Beijing. There he worked on the publication of the magazine新 青年( Xin Qingnian, La Jeunesse ) and was part of the literary revolution of the New Culture Movement. In 1920 he went to London for the purpose of linguistic studies in 1921 to Paris, where he received his doctorate in 1925. In the same year he returned to China to teach at the University of Beijing phonetics. In 1934 he retired to a linguistic study trip to an infection, which he then succumbed in Beijing.

Services

As part of the May 4th Movement, he spoke out against the use of the classical literary language in literature and advocated as one of the first to use colloquial forms. He called for a change in poetry in terms of style, form and content and tried just about to unrhymed and prose poems. Liu's works are characterized by his keen sense of observation; he represents in poetry so far little to unnoticed trifles and details concisely displays Another merit Lius is its commitment to a unified national language (国语, Guoyu ).
