Biography

Doesburg played until 1981 for UPS Elinkwijk, then in the Eerste he spent five years at Vitesse Arnhem Divisie. Here he received due to his reflexes his nickname de Kat ( " cat " ) and quickly became a crowd favorite, not only because he was already holding in one of his first games before the season against NEC in the Gelderland Cup final on penalties three penalty kicks. At this time, no player was fully professional at Vitesse, he had day jobs as steel fixers in construction. Some days he came in full regalia construction workers for training. After disputes with coach Hans Dorjee, he joined the 1986/87 season as a replacement for the injured Carlo L' Ami to Excelsior Rotterdam, for which he came 24 times in the Eredivisie used. Since the club wanted to significantly reduce his salary for next season, he did not renew at Excelsior but remained unemployed for a few months as a house husband at home. It was not until just before the season 1987/88 he received a call from Ajax coach Johan Cruijff, who took him as a replacement for the migrant Fred Grim as second goalkeeper behind Stanley Menzo to Ajax Amsterdam.

Cruijff led in this time the " gambling " goalkeeper who could act in attacks as the "last man ". This play came toward Doesburg; still with UPS Elinkwijk he was often used as a field player and had in 1981, in one of his last games for the club from the Utrecht North, even need to replace the center forward. He cared for a 1:2 residue with two header hits for the 3-2 of his team. Doesburg benefited in Amsterdam from goalkeeper training with Frans Hoek and was set for the second team. However, for the first team of the Amsterdam he made only five games, including one in the Eredivisiesaison 1987/88. For the last time he stood on March 27, 1989 against HFC Haarlem between the posts of Ajacieden, where he allowed no goals.

On June 7, 1989 Doesburg took the only player to one of Europe's top clubs on the flight of Kleurrijk Elftal to Suriname part that should compete in Paramaribo at a friendly tournament. Neither Ruud Gullit Frank Rijkaard or even Aron Winter, who were also invited, received a share of their clubs. Hennie Meijer and Doesburg's team-mate Stanley Menzo were already traveled earlier to Suriname. The Douglas DC-8, the SLM with 18 football players among the 187 people on board crashed on landing from Johan Adolf Pengel to the International Airport. Doesburg was one of the 176 victims of the accident flight.

Lloyd Doesburg was born on June 22, 1989 with the participation of the entire Ajax- professional team in Utrecht to the grave. Six of the teammates wore Doesburg's coffin. "We stayed until the coffin disappeared into the earth. I had never experienced, and it was very touching, "said Jan Wouters recalled some years later.

To commemorate the goalkeeper organizes Lelystad, lived in Doesburg, every New Year's a race to the Lloyd Doesburg Bokaal for the best penalty taker.
