Lodovico Guicciardini

Lodovico Guicciardini, ndl. Lowijs Guicciardyn, GV Ludwig Guicciardin ( born August 19, 1521 Florence, † March 22, 1589 in Antwerp ) was an Italian businessman, cartographer, humanist, geographer, politician and writer. He was a nephew Francesco Guicciardini and had the same tendency to presentation of history. He became famous for its historical city views and descriptions. In the Cathedral of Our Lady of Antwerp, he is buried.

Life

Lodovico Guicciardini came from an old noble family from Florence. Many of its members clad multiple high positions in the civil service, including his uncle Francesco Guicciardini. From his youth nothing is known. At 18, he left Italy and traveled through large parts of Western Europe (France, Germany ) and in 1541 over Lyon to Antwerp, where he settled in August 1542. He started a business which went bankrupt soon, and then worked Miscellaneous own account. At the beginning of the " Dutch survey" against the Spaniards he was in the fortress Vilvoorde on the orders of Duke of Alba (1507-1582) almost one and a half years imprisoned (1569-1570) - for statements unclear contents on the situation in the country.

In Antwerp, where he lived for almost fifty years, he created his famous works. One of his first was a contemporary - current time - History of the Netherlands ( Commentarii delle cose più memorabili ... ). He first gained fame through his masterpiece, a description of Antwerp: De Nederlanden idyllic: Antwerp en de Nederlanden in de 16e eeuw - The idyllic Netherlands: Antwerp and the Netherlands in the 16th century ( 1567). His books were always provided with elaborate cards, even perspective, and drawings. The best-known and most important of his works, an illustrated history treatise of the Netherlands, the following applies:

Descrittione DI M.LODOVICO GVICCIARDINI Patritio Fiorentino; DI TVTTI I PAESI BASSI, altrimenti Detti GERMANIA INFERIOR. IN ANVERSA. Apresso Christofano plan Tino, Stampa gates Regio. M.D.LXXXI.

In German:

With all geographic maps of the country, and with natural portrait of many major countries; reissued, and the whole extended to more than half by the same author. THE GREAT CATHOLIC KING PHILIP [ II ] D' AVSTRIA. With extensive INDEX all very memorable affairs. IN ANTWERP. In Christofano plan Tino, royal. Printer. M.D.LXXXI. ( 1581).

This work is considered to be strongly influencing contribution of the history and art of the former Netherlands. On his travels he came in various cities in the wider area and made there cityscapes and maps ( Aachen 1572).

Lodovico Guicciardini was a contemporary of Gerhard Mercator, the famous cartographer of his time, and Peter Breughel the Elder.
