Lonau is a health resort and district of the town Herzberg am Harz in the district of Osterode am Harz in Lower Saxony. It has 300 inhabitants (1 October 2013).

Geographical location

Lonau is located in the Upper Harz in a small, carved out from the Harz National Park area at 355-430 m above sea level. NN. Generally

Meaning of the name

There are two different approaches to the interpretation of the name Lonau:

  • In a document from the year 1260 the spelling Lodenowe is used. The determination word Loden means young beech drive, shoot or branch, while the base word or Owe Au means a river valley.
