London Symphony Orchestra, Vol. I

Occupation

Under the title of the London Symphony Orchestra Frank Zappa released several albums of orchestral music that was recorded in January 1983 under the direction of Kent Nagano by the London Symphony Orchestra. Zappa had the orchestra commissioned the pictures after he had tried for a long time in vain, to help his orchestral compositions in the style of new music to an adequate performance. First he published under the title London Symphony Orchestra Vol 1 six pieces. Until the publication of the second part London Symphony Orchestra Vol 2 took four years.

Zappa used for the recordings a digital multi-track recorders, which allowed him the simultaneous recording of 24 channels, and took the instruments individually or in groups from. This procedure was uncommon until then, enabled Zappa, however, subsequently be able to make a wide range of operations. The delay until the release of the second album Zappa justified by saying that he had to take advantage of the possibilities of digital technology to correct wrong -rehearsed passages note for note while recording.
