Lonnie Plaxico

Lonnie Plaxico ( born September 4, 1960 in Chicago, Illinois) is an American jazz bassist. His main instrument is the double bass, but he can also be heard on bass guitar. His game describes Günther Huesmann as " tremendously flexible and powerful ."

Life

Plaxico learned the bass playing self-taught from the age of twelve years and two years later had his first professional gigs. He studied with Von Freeman and went in 1980 to New York City, where he performed with such musicians as soon Chet Baker, Dexter Gordon, Sonny Stitt, Junior Cook, Hank Jones and Wynton Marsalis. From 1983 to 1986 he was a member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, with whom he appears on twelve albums, including the Grammy excellent New York Scene.

The mid-1980s he was among the first generation of the M -Base collective to Steve Coleman, where he initially was limited to the double bass, while about Coleman 's Five Elements and Cassandra Wilson's recordings of this period Kevin Bruce Harris played electric bass. But Plaxico played on the debut album Motherland Pulse by Coleman (1985 ), as well as on the first publications by Cassandra Wilson ( Point of View, 1986) and Greg Osby ( Sound Theatre, 1987), all of which appeared on the Munich label JMT. When Cassandra Wilson he has since participated in many of their albums and for over 15 years musical director and bassist first of her touring band.

Formed in 1986 Jack DeJohnette 's Special Edition new, dedicated next to the guitarist Mick Goodrick the M -Base saxophonists Greg Osby and Gary Thomas, Lonnie Plaxico on acoustic and electric bass and; to 1993, they recorded three albums. In addition, Plaxico among other Dizzy Gillespie, Branford Marsalis, John Hicks, Woody Shaw, Clark Terry, Don Byron, Slide Hampton, Cecil Brooks III, David Murray, Alice Coltrane, Stanley Turrentine, Joe Sample, Bill Cosby, Lonnie Liston Smith worked, Ravi Coltrane, Abbey Lincoln, Rachelle Ferrell, Dianne Reeves and Barbara Dennerlein.
