Lorenzo Priuli

Lorenzo Priuli (* 1489, † August 17 1559 in Venice) was the 82nd Doge of Venice. He reigned from 1556 to 1559.

Family

The Priuli were among the new families, they have been certified in 1297 in Venice. They presented three Doges Lorenzo beside his older brother and successor in Dogenamt Gerolamo Priuli the Doge Antonio Priuli (1618 - 1623). In addition, 14 procurators and 5 cardinals of the family emerged.

Life

Lorenzo Priuli was the youngest of six brothers. He was married to Zilia Dandolo. The republic he had served as a notary and as an envoy at the court of Charlemagne. V, who knighted him.

Dogenamt

Tomb

His tomb is in the church of San Salvatore. It is a double tomb for him and for his brother Gerolamo. The two-story tomb, built in 1578-1582, designed by Cesare Franco. The statues of the patron saints of the Doges, of St. Lawrence and St. Jerome, come from Giulio dal Moro.
