Lorenzo Tañada

Lorenzo Tanada Martinez ( born August 10, 1898 in Gumaca, Quezon; † 28 May 1992 Manila ) was a Filipino politician and longtime senator, who was primarily known for his opposition to U.S. influence in the Philippines.

Life

Tanada studied post-school law at the University of the Philippines and the Law School of Harvard University and then worked as a lawyer before he was General of the Philippines 1945-1947 Solicitor.

He was first elected in November 1947 as a member of the Senate and was one of this until its dissolution after the imposition of martial law by the dictatorial ruling President Ferdinand Marcos on September 21, 1972. He was thus the longest period of service member in the history of the Senate.

Particularly well known he was an organizer of the alliance of opponents of U.S. military bases and other groups to the organization of public opposition against the presence of U.S. forces in the Philippines. In September 1991, it was recognized after the Senate had an extension of the term of the last U.S. military base, the U.S. Naval Base Subic Bay, rejected.

His son was also Wigberto Tanada Senator and member of the House of Representatives, while his grandchildren Erin Tanada is a member of the House of Representatives.
