Los Andes (Chile)

Los Andes is a city in Chile in the Valparaíso Region V. It has 55 388 inhabitants ( 2005).

Geography

Los Andes is located 70 km north of Santiago de Chile. In its vicinity is the highest mountain in South America, the Aconcagua.

History

The town was founded in 1791 as Santa Rosa de los Andes, and received city rights in 1865. It was here renamed in Los Andes. 1887, the city was ravaged by a devastating cholera epidemic.

Economy

The city is an important economic center since it has a direct road link to the Argentine city of Mendoza. Due to the favorable climate for agriculture Los Andes plays an important role.

Tourism

Because of its proximity to the Andes Los Andes is an important stop to the ski areas. A few kilometers from the city center is a thermal bath in a private hotel complex.
