Los Testigos Islands

Los Testigos (Spanish Archipelago los Testigos ) is a group of islands located in the Caribbean Sea, about 400 km north of Caracas, capital of Venezuela, as well as approximately 80 km northeast of Isla Margarita. Geographically includes the islands of the Leeward Islands, administratively to the Venezuelan Dependencias Federales ( Federal Territories ), which are subordinated to the Venezuelan Ministry of Interior.

The archipelago consists of six islands and numerous tiny rocky islands. At Los Testigos includes the following islands:

  • Isla Testigo Grande, the main island
  • Isla Conejo, east of the main island
  • Isla Iguana, south of the main island
  • Peñón de Fuera, the northernmost rock
  • Isla Morro Blanco, south of the main island
  • Isla Noreste, northeast of the main island
  • Isla Ratjada, east of the main island
  • El Chivo, rock

The islands together have a land area of 6.53 km ². The population is approximately 200 inhabitants, whose main industries are fishing and tourism. On the main island, the Venezuelan Navy also operates a small sub-station ( La Estación de Secundaria Guardacostas " Los Testigos "), which is followed by the main station Carupano.

On the island Iguana, a radio station of Movilnet is built to be run on alternative energy sources. The station should begin its work in early 2010.

The island Testigo Grande is sometimes visited by cruise ships.
