Lothian Nicholson

Lieutenant - General Lothian Nicholson, KCB ( January 19, 1827 *, † June 27, 1893 ) was a British officer and colonial administrator.

Nicholson received his education at the Mr Malleson 's School in Hove, Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. In 1846 he joined the Royal Corps of Engineers. In 1855 he took part during the Crimean War at the Siege of Sevastopol. In 1857 he was transferred to Calcutta, where he was involved in the suppression of the Indian uprising. He participated in the capture of Lucknow.

After returning from India in 1861, he received the command of the Royal Engineers in the London District. But in 1868 he held the same official position in Gibraltar, before he was in the same year, Assistant Adjutant General for the Royal Engineers in Ireland.

In 1878 he was appointed Lieutenant Governor of Jersey. Starting in 1886, Nicholson held the official position of Inspector - General of Fortifications. In 1891 he was appointed Governor of Gibraltar. He died during his term of office in 1893. His grave is located on the North Cemetery in Gibraltar.
