Louis de Carné

Louis -Joseph Marcelin, comte de Carné, ( born February 17, 1804 in Quimper, † February 11, 1876 at Quimper ) was a French journalist, politician and historian.

Life

Louis de Carné came from an impoverished noble family. At the age of 16, he was taken by a great uncle, who enabled him to study in Paris. 1825 began de Carné, catholic and supporters of the royalists, a diplomatic career at the Foreign Ministry. After the July Revolution of 1830, he joined the July Monarchy and in 1833 the General Council of Finistère and in 1839 elected to the Chamber of Deputies, where he remained until the Revolution of February 1848. He wrote for the Journal des Débats, the Revue des Deux Mondes and the Correspondant and published books on politics and history.

In 1863 he was able to beat Emile Littre, when selected to the 12th chair of the Académie française in the third ballot. This election attracted great attention and was considered a coup d'etat, as de Carné was chosen by supporters of the Church and of followers François Guizot.
