Louis Gauchat

Louis Gauchat ( born January 12, 1866 in Les Brenets; † August 22, 1942 in Lenzerheide ) was a Swiss linguist and philologist.

Life and work

Gauchat studied in Zurich and Paris ( with Gaston Paris) and received his doctorate in 1890 with Heinrich Morf in Zurich on Le patois de Dompierre ( Halle aS 1891). He was then a high school teacher in Bern and Zurich and lecturer ( 1893 to 1896 in Bern, from 1897 to 1902 in Zurich ). From 1902 to 1907 he was a full professor in Bern. From 1907 to 1931 he held the successor of James Ulrich in Zurich the linguistic Romanist Chair and was from 1926 to 1928 and President of the University.

Together with Jules Jeanjaquet and Ernest Tappolet he founded in 1899 the Glossaire the patois de la Suisse Romande, along with Albert Bachmann 1913 Phonogram Archive of the University of Zurich.
