Louis-Jean Résal

Jean Résal, also Louis -Jean Résal, ( born October 22, 1854 in Besancon, † November 14, 1919 in Paris) was a French civil engineer, known among other things, by His various bridges in Paris and other iron bridges in France.

Résal was the son of the Inspector General for the mining sector. He was mechanics professor at the Ecole Polytechnique, Inspector General of the roads and bridges ( Ponts et Chaussée ) and taught bridge at the École des Ponts et Chaussées.

His first bridges emerged after studying in Nantes, the Pont du général de la Motte Rouge on the Erdre (1885 ) and a now destroyed bridge over the Loire in Nantes, after the Second World War designed as Pont Résal in a different form. In Paris, he was responsible for his bridges and rehabilitated eg the Pont d' Arcole. He is known especially for the two iron Seine bridges Pont Alexandre III (1900, for the World Expo built ) and Pont Mirabeau (1896 ), next to still the Passerelle Debilly (1900), the extension of the Pont de Bercy (1864 ) and the Pont Notre -Dame (1914, partly stone, partly iron).

He wrote several books on bridge ( both of iron and stone ), a book on strength of materials and one on soil mechanics.

He was President of the Commission for reinforced concrete ( Commission du Betonarme ). A street in the 13th arrondissement of Paris is named after him.
