Louis Tobback

Louis Marie Joseph Tobback ( May 3, 1938 in Leuven ) is a Belgian politician for the Socialist Party Other ( sp.a ).

Life

1962 closed Tobback his studies in Romance Studies at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel with a master's and then taught for a time as a French teacher at Koninklijk Atheneum in Leuven.

His political career began in 1965 at the advice of the public welfare center in Leuven, where he was a member until 1970. In 1971 he was elected to the City Council Louvain and appointed the first aldermen. In the elections of 1974 he was elected a deputy in the Belgian Chamber of Representatives. In this role, he was from 1979 to 1988 chairman of the SP Group (now sp.a ).

From 1988 Tobback was interior minister in the governments Martens VIII, IX and Dehaene I and put this office in 1994 down to the chair of the Socialist Party to take over. When his successor Interior Minister Johan Vande Lanotte resigned from his post in April 1998 because of the Dutroux scandal, Tobback was re-appointed Minister of the Interior, but had to resign himself in September 1998, again after the Nigerian asylum seeker Semira Adamu had come with her expulsion killed which led to violent protests in Belgium.

Since 1991 Tobback Senator in the Belgian Senate and from September 1998 Mayor of lions. His son Bruno Tobback was also Minister of the Sp.A.
