Louise Dahl-Wolfe

Louise Dahl - Wolfe, born as Louise Emma Augusta Dahl (* November 19, 1895 San Francisco, California, † December 11 1989 in New Jersey) was an American photographer, best known for their work for the fashion magazine Harper 's Bazaar been.

Life

Louise Dahl was born in San Francisco, California, the daughter of Norwegian parents. In 1914 she began studying at the California School of Fine Arts (now San Francisco Art Institute ) and others at Rudolph Schaeffer. In the 1920s she became interested in photography after an exhibition of Pictorialistin Anne Brigman.

The early 1930s, Louise Dahl - Wolfe entirely focused on the photography and one of her portraits, which she made during a summer stay in Tennessee, was released in 1933 as her first published work in the magazine Vanity Fair. The Tennessee series of pictures from a native of this portrait was taken by Edward Steichen in an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, 1937. From 1933 led Louise Dahl - Wolfe from her photo studio in New York and recorded for various large fashion companies and magazines.

Between 1936 and 1958 she worked for the fashion magazine Harper 's Bazaar and made countless fashion and cover shots. Louise Dahl - Wolfe photographed especially outdoors and with natural light, both at that time a novelty. For her fashion shots she also traveled to many regions of the world including South America and Africa.

In addition to fashion shots, Louise Dahl - Wolfe also made portraits among other things, by WH Auden, Josephine Baker, Cecil Beaton, Coco Chanel, Colette, Christian Dior, Edward Hopper, Christopher Isherwood, Carson McCullers, Orson Welles, Eudora Welty and Mae West. Also regarded as the " discoverer " of the young Lauren Bacall.

Between 1958 and 1960, Louise Dahl - Wolfe also worked for Vogue and Sports Illustrated. After her retirement she lived until her death in 1989, many years in Nashville, Tennessee. Was married to Louise Dahl, since 1927, with the sculptor Meyer Wolfe, who created many of their image backgrounds.

With their style, they enjoyed great success and had a lasting influence on later in the fashion photography as Horst P. Horst, Irving Penn and Richard Avedon.
