Fear and Loving is a French- Italian-German film drama by Margarethe von Trotta from 1988. As literary work, the play served Three Sisters (1901 ) by Anton P. Chekhov, wherein the act from Russia turn of the century moved to Italy in the 1980s been.

Action

In the small Italian town of Pavia University, the three sisters Velia, Mary and Sandra Parini live. Velia is the oldest and for the other two model and mother figure at the same time, while Mary is unhappily married to a television comedian and suffers from depression. Sandra, the youngest, is an idealistic medical student who just celebrated her 18th birthday.

The sisters suffer, each in their own way, including not knowing which path of life, both professionally and personally, the right for them. Velia, which has already resigned almost with being alone, falls in love with the married university professor Massimo. To their displeasure, it grows her sister Mary to rival in the fight for Massimo's favor. When Sandra fell in love with a doctor, they increasingly neglected their studies. When a car accident this is killed while Sandra remains unharmed. After Massimo returns repentant to his wife, the rivalry between Velia and Mary walk in solidarity and together, they comforted Sandra.

Background

After successes with German films such as The leaden time (1981) and Rosa Luxembourg (1986 ) the director Margarethe von Trotta moved its center of life in Italy. Fear and Love was her first Italian film, but could not build on the success of their political films. The film was shot on location in Pavia.

Fear and Love was premiered on April 19, 1988 in Italy and presented on 7 May 1988 at the International Film Festival in Cannes, where the film drama also took part in the competition for the Golden Palm. In Germany Fear and Love was first shown on September 29, 1988 in the cinemas.

Awards

Fear and loved ones took at the International Film Festival in Cannes in 1988, the competition for the Palme d'Or in part, which was ultimately awarded to Bille August's Pelle the Conqueror ( Pelle Erobreren ).
