Lucas Mangope

Kgosi Lucas Mangope Manyane (* December 27 1923 in Motswedi ) is a South African chief and politician. Between 1977 and 1994 he was president of the independent homelands Bophuthatswana. He was, until 2011 Chairman of he founded United Christian Democratic Party ( UCDP ).

Mangope was from June 1, 1972, first Chief Minister of the Homelands. With the dismissal of Bophuthatswana in the formal independence on September 5, 1977 Mangope was used by the South African government as President. After a failed coup he owed the South African military to assert its power.

Immediately before the first elections, including the black majority end of April 1994 tried troops of the right-wing Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging, Mangope to hold on to power and thereby prevent the reincorporation Bophuthatswanas to South Africa. After arguments Mangope was deposed on 13 March 1994, an interim administration under Tjaart van der Walt and T. Job Mokgoro prepared the reincorporation ago on 27 April 1994.

On 22 July 1998 Mangope was convicted by the Supreme Court in Mafikeng in 102 cases of theft and in three cases of forex fraud guilty.
