Lucas Samaras

Lucas Samaras (Greek Λουκάς Σαμαράς, born September 14, 1936 in Kastoria, Greece ) is an American- Greek painter and sculptor.

He settled in 1948 in the United States down, whose citizenship he acquired to the Greek 1955 addition. In 1959 he had his first solo exhibition in New York's Reuben Gallery. He was a participant of the documenta 4 in Kassel in 1968, represented in the Documenta 5 (1972 ) in the Department Individual mythologies and the Documenta 6 in 1977 as an artist. In 2009 he was represented at the 53rd Venice Biennale at the Greek pavilion with the installation PARAXENA.

For his works he uses elements such as knives, razor blades and needles.

His works are represented in many major collections including: Getty Museum (Los Angeles ), Museum of Modern Art (New York City ), National Gallery of Australia (Canberra ), Tate Gallery (London ), National Gallery of Art (Washington DC ), Smithsonian American Art Museum (Washington DC), the Whitney Museum of American Art ( New York City ) and the National Gallery in Athens.
