Total reserve of the biosphere reserve

The Luchsee fills the central part of the bog area in Brandenburg Dahme- Spreewald, about 2.5 km northwest of the village Kraus Nick.

Structure and Formation of the bog

The Moor is located in a small, formed about 20,000 years ago the glacier tongue basin to the Krausnicker mountains. There the Hauptendmoräne the Brandenburg stage of the Vistula ice runs. The Moor is located at an altitude of 52.7 m above sea level. NN, is about 57 hectares and without natural aboveground water supply and drainage. It is only fed by rainwater and groundwater. In the center of the bog is the elongated, 7 -hectare Luchsee. This has a depth of less than 2 m. The development history of Luchsees is well researched by palynological core studies. The bog has grown continuously since Subboreal (ca. 5,000 years ago). During the Boreal 9000-7500 years ago, existed here a shallow lake, which was then overgrown with reeds and Seggentorf. Only in the last few centuries spread on the moor peat moss - cotton grass - entities. Recent studies prove the beginning of sedimentation in the lake as early as the late Weichsel ice age, which ended about 11,600 years ago.

In previous work, the Luchseemoor was referred to as boiler Moor. Current studies are based on a combination of Versumpfungs and siltation Moor.

Current hazard

Over the past twenty years, the water level of the Luchsees dropped dramatically, so that it is assumed today that the former adopted underground Verbindungslosigkeit not exist for aquifer Krausnicker mountains and the Spreewald. Since the amplitude of rainwater and surface water run-off in the observed years should be almost the same, is not assumed that the precipitation conditions are responsible for this trend. Also, statistical comparisons of the annual precipitation to the long-term average of total precipitation did not suggest any significant abnormalities in the amount and distribution of rainfall patterns over the last years. Rather, it is assumed that an active braid has resulted from climate change and land use change to the strong lowering of ground water. Climate change had mainly the heating that results in increased evaporation. Large areas of the former military airfield fire have been forested in recent years, so that there has been increasing evaporation significantly. Similarly, in recent decades have become significantly denser Waldbestockung in the immediate vicinity of the bog has an effect. Also, an influence of the low-water stages of the river Spree in sub- Spreewald is discussed, since then amplified groundwater flows from the adjacent high land on which the well is located in the lowlands Luchsee of the Spreewald.

Because of the declining water level, the Moor has already fallen mostly dry. Pines have replaced most of the original bog vegetation.
