Lucian Bernhard

Lucian Bernhard, actually Emil Kahn ( born March 15, 1883 in Cannstatt near Stuttgart, † May 29, 1972 in New York City ), often also Lucien Bernhard, was a German graphic designers of the New Objectivity, typographer, architect and first professor of poster art in general. The family of font styles, which he developed is called Bernard. Coffee Hag, Pelican and the Bosch spark plug are still characterized stylistically by Lucian Bernhard.

Life

Emil Kahn grew up in a German - Jewish family. After graduation, he studied at the Munich Art Academy and moved to Berlin in 1901, where he worked at Ernst Growold for poster printing Hollerbaum & Schmidt and many poster designs for companies such as shoe store Stiller (owner: Carl Stiller ) in Berlin, Pelican, Manoli, coffee Hag, Bosch and Faber -Castell anfertigte. Beginning of the century he adopted the pseudonym Lucian Bernhard, under which he became world famous.

He was from 1905 an honorary member of the Society of Friends Poster at the dentist Hans Sachs, with whom he 's Poster (later Gebrauchsgraphik ) founded the magazine.

In the years 1910-1920 Lucian Bernhard designed as artistic director of the German workshops Hellerau furniture, wallpaper, carpets and lighting. He was commissioned by the Cologne Chocolate producer Ludwig Stollwerck from 1911 posters for the Stollwerck outdoor advertising. He also founded around this time the magazine The poster (later use graphic). He operated an architectural studio, where he produced, among others, for his own house in Grunewald designs for the interior decor and designed a new office building for the Cigarettenfirma Manoli, who was born on Potsdamer Straße 27 a in the summer of 1922 at the Bellevue in Berlin. In Berlin he was appointed in 1923 as professor of advertising art at the educational establishment of the Arts and Crafts Museum. He lived from 1925 with breaks in the U.S., where he started a design studio Bernhard Rose held, later mainly taught. In 1964, his works at the documenta III in Kassel in the Department graphics were shown.

Lucian Bernhard was the father of the photographer Ruth Bernhard.
