Lucian Mureșan

Lucian Cardinal Mureşan (* May 23, 1931 in Firiza, now part of Baia Mare, Maramureş County ) is a Romanian Major Archbishop and thus the head of the united with Rome Romanian Greek- Catholic Church.

Life

Lucian Mureşan was born on 23 May 1931 as the tenth of twelve children of his parents Petru and Mary and received on 19 December 1964, the ordination to the priesthood for the Diocese of Maramureş. Pope John Paul II appointed him in 1990 as Bishop of Maramureş. The Episcopal ordination on May 27, 1990 donated it to the then Archbishop of Fagaras and Alba Iulia and later Cardinal, Alexandru Todea; Co-consecrators were the Bishop of Lugoj, Ioan Ploscaru, and the retired nuncio in Germany and later Cardinal, Guido Del Mestri. 1994 he was appointed Metropolitan Archbishop of Alba Iulia and Fagaras. On August 27, 1994, he was installed in the Cathedral of Blaj. As metropolitan he received from Pope John Paul II the pallium.

On 16 December 2005 he was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI. appointed as the first Major Archbishop of the Romanian Catholic Church.

In solemn consistory of February 18, 2012 it took Benedict XVI. as cardinal priest with the titular church Sant'Atanasio ( Sant'Atanasio dei Greci ) to the College of Cardinals.

He is President of the Romanian Bishops' Conference and President of the Council of the Romanian church in Romania.
