Lucius Cornelius Merula (consul 87 BC)

Lucius Cornelius Merula († 87 BC) was a politician in the late Roman Republic.

He must have been after the then applicable laws and regulations not later than 90 BC, praetor, as he BC in place of the expelled from Rome Lucius Cornelius Cinna ( the other branch of the Cornelii family belonged ) was elected consul 87. The one populare policy representative Cinna returned with the support of Gaius Marius returned to Rome. Merula resigned from his office and took his own life when he should be impeached.

Before his death Merula resigned from the priesthood of the Flemish Dialis, which he had held since an unknown date. The office remained until the time of Augustus unoccupied, as the young Gaius Julius Caesar, Marius had designated as successor Merula, the priesthood apparently never formally took over.
