Ludovic Vitet

Ludovic Vitet ( born October 18, 1802 in Paris, † June 5, 1873 in Versailles) was a French politician and writer, who championed especially for the Monuments historiques.

Family and Education

Vitet came from a rich family of the bourgeoisie. He was the grandson of the Convention member Vitet Louis (1736-1809) and son of Pierre -Jean and Amélie Vitet Arnaudtizon. Ludovic Vitet studied from 1819 to 1824 Law at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris.

Professional life

Vitet was on the editorial board of the newspaper Le Globe, and also worked for the Revue française and the Revue des Deux Mondes.

Between 1827 and 1829 he wrote several plays (Les Barricades, Les États de Blois, La mort de Henri III), which made him known. They were in 1844 under the title La Ligue in a band.

As one of the key representatives of liberalism Vitet was a friend of Madame de Staël, Alessandro Manzoni and Sismondi. Together with friends, he founded the Association Aide -toi, le ciel t'aidera ( "Help yourself so God helps " ) to support the Liberals in the election in 1827.

It was not until the July Revolution of 1830 opened him new perspectives. He was prefect in 1830 under the interior minister François Guizot, who in the same year created the post of Inspector général des monuments historiques for him. After inspection tours first in northern France Vitet delivered a report from 1831, but also with the museums, libraries and archives dealt with the state of the buildings. Further inspection trips led him to Burgundy, the Lyonnais and in the south west of France, where he saved the cloister of Moissac. His successor in that office in 1834 Prosper Mérimée.

On April 10, 1834 Vitet was appointed Secrétaire général Ministry of Economy. After the February Revolution of 1848 Vitet in 1849 elected to the Assembly Legislative and he became one of its vice-presidents. He belonged to the monarchist majority of the Chamber, but was rather against the policy of Napoleon III .. Vitet was one of the deputies, who in 1851 against the coup d'etat of Napoleon III. protested. Therefore, he was arrested and spent several days in jail.

Under the Second Empire, he retired from political life and devoted himself to literature and art. During the siege of Paris in 1870, he supported the Republican movement and published articles in the Revue des Deux Mondes.

On 8 February 1871 he was elected to the National Assembly, where he became one of its vice-presidents. He was under Adolphe Thiers member of the Commission, which negotiated the peace with the German Empire.

Ludovic Vitet was in the Third Republic, President of the Commission des monuments historiques, where he was involved in the revision of the list of monuments historiques.
