Ludwig Barth zu Barthenau

Ludwig Barth Barthenau ( born January 17, 1839 in Rovereto, † August 3, 1890 in Vienna) was an Austrian chemist. He spent his childhood as the son of a district office secretary in Rovereto, Schwaz, Imst and in Bregenz. After a dislocation of his father to Innsbruck he attended the Gymnasium in 1850, where he also took off in 1856 to finish his schooling.

To Barthenau first studied under Henry Hlasiwetz chemistry at the University of Innsbruck. In 1859, he served in the Sardinian War and after a short stay at the University of Munich under Liebig and Pettenkofer he received his doctorate in 1860 at age 21 in Innsbruck at Hlasiwetz. In the period under Hlasiwetz he discovered the resorcinol. In 1864 he became a Privatdozent in 1867 successor of Hlasiwetz who went to Vienna, Innsbruck. After the sudden death of Hlasiwetz 1875 he took over in 1876 its position at the University of Vienna. In 1885 he was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina. Ludwig Barth Barthenau died in Vienna in 1890.
