Ludwig Biermann

Ludwig Franz Benedict Biermann ( born March 13, 1907 in Hamm, † January 12, 1986 in Munich) was a German physicist.

Ludwig Biermann put 1925 his diploma at the grammar school Hammonense in Hamm / Westphalia. from. After graduating, he worked in the field of astrophysics and plasma physics. At the Max Planck Institute for Physics and Astrophysics in Munich, he was the director. His main area was the theoretical astrophysics, and here especially the structure of the star.

He said, inter alia, 1951, the existence of the solar wind ahead, which was first detected in 1959. He based this theory on the orientation of the gas tails of comets, which was due to the solar wind. He also dealt with applications of plasma physics and electrodynamics on astrophysical problems, the theory of controlled thermonuclear fusion and the cosmic rays.

Biermann 1967, was awarded the Bruce Medal, in 1974 with the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society, and in 1980 with the Karl Schwarzschild Medal of the Astronomical Society. According to him, the Ludwig Biermann Award was named. Since 1972 he was elected member of the Scholars Academy Leopoldina.
