Ludwig Finscher

Ludwig Finscher ( born March 14, 1930 in Kassel, Germany ) is a German music historian.

Life and work

Finscher studied 1949-1954 musicology, English and German at the University of Göttingen. He received his doctorate with a thesis on the topic of The Masses and motets Loyset Comperes. From 1955 to 1960 he worked as a freelance music critic and in 1960 assistant to Walter Wiora, first at the University of Kiel and since 1965 at the University of Saarbrücken.

In 1967 in Saarbrücken habilitation with the work of the classical string quartet and its foundation by Joseph Haydn. From 1968 to 1981 he held a chair of Musicology in Frankfurt, from 1981 until his retirement in 1995, the same position in Heidelberg. From 1974 to 1977 he was president of the Society for Music Research, 1977-1981 President of the International Society for Music Research.

Finscher now lives in Wolfenbüttel ( Lower Saxony).

Research

Among the most important works Finschers counts his editorship of the 28 -volume edition of the encyclopedia The music in past and present, in which he wrote around 40 articles themselves.

As musicological standard works, the two-volume music of the 15th and 16th centuries apply his extensive studies of the string quartet, chamber music and to Joseph Haydn, as well.

Finscher contributed to the total expenditure of the works of Gluck and Mozart, as well as the edition of compositions by Paul Hindemith. He is also co-editor of Capellae Apostolicae Sixtinaeque Collectanea Acta Monumenta.

He has published over 130 articles in edited volumes and journals.

  • Since 2002 Honorary Member of the Greek magazine " Mousikologia " (ed. Prof. Dr. Olympic Psychopedis - Frangou, Dir of Dept " Historical & Systematic Musicology " of the Department of Music Studies of the Univ. Athens).
  • 2003 Awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Zurich
  • 2006 Balzan Prize for History of Western Music since 1600, doped with 1 million Swiss francs. ( Ceremony on 24 November 2006 by the Italian President Giorgio Napolitano in Rome).
  • 2009 Awarded an honorary doctorate from the Faculty of Arts, University of the Saarland
