Ludwig Karl Georg Pfeiffer

Ludwig Karl Georg Pfeiffer, sometimes Louis Karl Georg Pfeiffer ( born July 4, 1805 in Kassel, † October 2, 1877 in Kassel ) was a German physician, botanist and malacologist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Pfeiff. ".

Life and work

Ludwig Karl Georg Pfeiffer is the son of the lawyer Burkhard Wilhelm Pfeiffer ( 1777-1852 ). He studied from 1821 to 1825 in Göttingen and Marburg medicine. In 1826 he settled in Kassel as a physician and in 1828 professor of pathology.

During the November Uprising in Poland in 1831, he was medical officer in the army of the insurgents. His diary entries from this period were published in 2000.

Because of his scientific interests, he gave up his medical practice. In 1837 he published a first book on cacti in which he described the cultivated gardens in the German species and their synonyms. 1843 was followed by another, co-written with Christoph Friedrich Otto work on cacti: Picture and description of flowering cacti.

On October 28, 1838 Pfeiffer broke together with Johannes Gundlach ( 1810-1886 ) and Carl Friedrich Otto Eduard ( 1812-1885 ), the son of Christoph Friedrich Otto, from Hamburg to Havana, where he arrived on January 5, 1839. In Cuba, where he wanted to collect cacti, he then turned more and more to including the collection of conches.

1840 to 1843 he traveled to Paris, Hungary, on the Krainer and Carinthian Alps and in the areas of Fiume and Trieste. The results of these trips can be found in Monographia Heliceorum viventium and creeds ad historiam heliceorum again.

Together with Karl Theodor Menke (1791-1861) he was editor of the magazine since 1846 for Malakozoologie ( 1854 Malakozoologische sheets).

His published from 1847 to Flora of Lower Hesse and Munden is the first flora of this area.

According to Pfeiffer named taxa

Joseph Salm- Dyck Reifferscheidt - named in his honor the genus Pfeiffera Salm- Dyck plant the cactus family ( Cactaceae ).

The genus Pfeifferago Kuntze the plant family of Cunoniaceae was named after him.
