Ludwig Schongauer

Ludwig Schongauer (* before 1450, probably in Colmar, Colmar † 1494 ) was a German painter and engraver of the late Gothic period.

Life

About his life little is known. His father was a goldsmith Caspard, from Augsburg in 1440 and settled in Colmar down. His older brother is the famous painter and graphic artist Martin Schongauer. Ludwig was educated at home in Colmar and went on tour. He received the 1479 Civil Rights Ulmer given, which shows that much of him stopped and wanted to keep him in the city, and he married into a family of painters Ulmer. In 1486 he purchased the Civil Rights in Augsburg and led a workshop there. After the death of Martins in 1491 he took over the workshop, acquired the Colmar Civil Rights in 1493, but died in 1494.

Work

The engraving is backed by a monogram, eating the imitation of his famous brother Martin. All other works have been attributed to him by style comparison, the write-ups are controversial in the research, because the works are stylistically different.
