Luigi di Canossa

Cardinal Luigi di Canossa SJ ( born April 20, 1809 in Verona, † March 12, 1900 ) was a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Biography

Luigi di Canossa was descended from the noble Italian family Canossa. His parents were Bonifacio of Canossa and Francesca de'Castiglioni. He attended primary school in Verona. On March 25, 1837, he joined the Congregation of the Jesuits and laid two years later in 1839 the religious profession. After his ordination, which took place in Modena in 1841, he worked as a lecturer at seminaries of Jesuits, however, drew also served as minister in various Italian cities. Most recently, he was director of the seminary in Reggio Emilia.

In 1847 he resigned from after an illness and with the permission of the Order of the Jesuits. Di Canossa was incardinated in the Diocese of Verona and determined in 1857 canon of the Cathedral of Verona. He also headed the diocesan own library. On August 24, 1861 Canossa his diocese at Kaiser Franz Joseph I of Austria - Hungary was appointed ambassador.

Just one month later, on September 30, 1861, was di Canossa appointment as Bishop of the Diocese of Verona. The episcopal ordination donated him on January 23, 1862 Benedetto Riccabona de Reinchenfels, the then Bishop of the Archdiocese of Trent. In 1868, Bishop di Canossa took part in the First Vatican Council. Immediately afterwards di Canossa should be appointed as Archbishop of Bologna, but he refused because of his attachment to his transfer from Verona.

In the consistory of March 12, 1877, Pope Pius IX. di Canossa as a cardinal priest in the College of Cardinals, and he pointed to the titular church of San Marcello on March 20th of that year. A year later counted di Canossa to the participants of the conclave of 1878, in which Leo XIII. was elected Pope.

After a stroke, the Cardinal di Canossa suffered in 1891, he had to limit his pastoral activities radically. From July 1899 until his death eight months later di Canossa was the oldest living cardinal of the church.

Cardinal Luigi di Canossa died shortly before his 91st birthday.

He is now buried in Verona in the church of San Zeno Maggiore.
