Luigi Gatti

Luigi Gatti ( born October 7, 1740 in Lazise; ? † March 1, 1817 in Salzburg) was an Italian composer of classical music and a Catholic priest.

Life

Luigi Gatti was born in 1740 as the son of the organist Francesco della Gatto in Lazise. He received his education in Mantua, where he was ordained a priest, and a tenor at the Church of Santa Barbara was. The conductor Giovanni Battista Pattoni (1713-1773) mentioned him in 1768 as one of a " reliable tenor, ... good organist and composer ." His first opera " Alessandro nell'Indie " was performed in Mantua. 1770 met Gatti of the Mozart family on their first trip to Italy and copied one of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's fairs.

Since the death of Kapellmeister Giuseppe Lolli (1701-1778) Archbishop Hieronymus Colloredo examined (1732-1812) in all Italian cities as well as in Vienna, Prague and Hradec Králové for a successor, and since Ferdinando Bertoni (1725-1813) was not available, was ( on recommendation of Anton Theodor von Colloredo- Waldsee - Mels, Archbishop of Olomouc) 1783 Luigi Gatti (last ) fürsterzbischöflicher Kapellmeister in Salzburg. The result was some discord with Leopold Mozart, whose application had been rejected for this position. Between 1801 and 1803 Gatti helped Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's sister Nannerl in the search for hitherto unknown works of Mozart. In this context, he corresponded to 1804 several times with the publisher Breitkopf & Härtel.

It was at that time quite common parts from popular operas to be backed by a spiritual text, which was not considered very offensive in the 18th century and was rather understood as an appreciation of music. So put Gatti by reworked parts of Joseph Haydn's oratorio "The Creation", his " Creation Mass " together.

During his lifetime, Gattis only a few works have been published, although numerous manuscripts and transcripts were present in the Salzburg archives.

Luigi Gatti died on 1 March 1817 and was buried in the cemetery Sebastian, Salzburg.
