Luigi Orione

Don Luigi Orione ( born June 23, 1872 in Pontecurone, province of Alessandria, † March 12, 1940 in Sanremo, Liguria) was Italian priest who was canonized.

Life

He joined on 14 September 1885, at the Franciscans of Voghera, but was sent away in 1886 due to a serious disease with risk of death. On October 4, he became a pupil at the Oratory of Valdocco in Turin, where he stayed for three years. Between him and Don Bosco, it was a close appreciation, which lasted up to Don Bosco's death in 1888. Immediately after the death of Don Bosco Orione diseases were miraculous healed.

On October 16, 1889, he healthy the seminary of Tortona (AL), where he was also the task of the Dommesners entrusted. On 2 March 1892, he began his youth apostolate and on 3 July of the same year he opened the Oratory of San Luigi, one year later, also on October 15, 1893 College of Arms in the ruins of San Bernardino di Tortona.

On April 13, 1895 he was ordained a priest. In 1899, he began to get a group of priests and clerics gather that the "work of Divine Providence " founded by him, which was approved in 1903 by the diocesan bishop. For this " work" developed the religious community "Sons of Divine Providence."

In 1908 he went to Messina and Reggio Calabria, where an earthquake had destroyed everything. For three years he devoted himself especially to the orphans. In Reggio di Calabria, he contributed to the emergence of the Santuario di Sant'Antonio. In the same way, he became involved after the earthquake in Marsican 1915.

In 1915 he founded within the " Work of Divine Providence," the female congregation "Little Missionary Sisters of the Love" ( Italian: " Congregation of the Mission piccole Suore aria della Carita " ) emerged from the further two contemplative branches.

At the end of the First World War, the Orion plant began to expand, numerous colleges, agricultural colonies and charitable works and auxiliary facilities in Italy ( Milan, Genoa, Rome) and around the world ( Buenos Aires, Argentina, Sao Paolo in Brazil, Santiago, Chile) were established

He sent missionaries to Brazil (1913 ), Argentina and Uruguay ( 1921), Palestine (1921 ), Poland ( 1923), Rhodes (1925 ) in the United States (1934 ), UK ( 1935), Albania (1936).

Orione himself made missionary journeys 1921/1922 and 1934-1937 to Latin America (Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay)

He also founded in 1931, the Santuario di Nostra Signora della Guardia in Tortona ( Alessandria ), and in 1938 the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Caravaggio at Fumo di Corvino San Quirico (Province of Pavia)

In the winter of 1940 Orione heart disease and lung disease. He went to Sanremo to recover, but to no avail.

Veneration of Saints

His body was exhumed in 1965 and is located in Tortona, he founded a sanctuary.

Orione was beatified and canonized on October 26, 1980 on May 16, 2004 Pope John Paul II.
