Luis Alberto Lacalle

Luis Alberto Lacalle Herrera ( born July 13, 1941 in Montevideo) is a lawyer and was on 1 March 1990 and 1 March 1995, the 15th President of Uruguay.

Family

Lacalle Herrera is grandchild of the famous politician Luis Alberto de Herrera ( 1873-1959 ). He is married to Julia Pou, they have three children common children: Pilar, Luis Alberto and Juan José.

Career

Lacalle studied law at the Universidad de la República in Montevideo. At the age of 17, he began actively take an interest in politics and joined the Partido Nacional in. After his studies, he held many political offices, he was a member of the National Committee of the Partido Nacional, the Finance Committee, the Transportation Committee and the Public Employment Committee and Senator.

1987 Lacalle was appointed Vice President of the Senate and voted on 19 July 1999 to the National Chairman, the highest position in the Partido Nacional. As the biggest success during his presidency is the creation of the Common Market Mercosur to view along with the President Carlos Menem, Argentina, Fernando Collor de Mello, Brazil and Andrés Rodríguez from Paraguay.

For his honorable activities Lacalle received an honorary doctorate from:

  • Hebrew University in Jerusalem
  • Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara in Mexico
  • Universidad Nacional in Paraguay

Lacalle Herrera is a member of the Club of Rome.
