Luis Bernardo Honwana

Luís Augusto Bernardo Manuel Honwana (* November 1942 in Maputo (then Lourenço Marques ) Mozambique) is a journalist and writer.

Honwana grew up in Moamba up as the son of a translator.

At 17 he went to study in Maputo, where he worked as a journalist and was later discovered by José Craveirinha as a writer. He actively participated in the Mozambican independence movement FRELIMO and sat for three years in prison.

After the independence of Mozambique was Honwana government employees and 1982 Minister of Culture under Samora Machel. From 1987 he became involved in UNESCO, joined her in 1995 and became director of the newly established South African UNESCO offices.

Luis Bernardo Honwanas literature is influenced by and had a great impact on the Mozambican independence and national aspirations.
