Luis Camnitzer

Luis Camnitzer ( born November 6, 1937 in Lübeck) is an Uruguayan contemporary artist, art theorist, professor and curator who lives in the USA. The concept artist is art categories such as installation, drawing, printmaking and photography as an artistic medium. He took part in documenta.

Life

The family emigrated in 1939 with the two-year Luis Camnitzer from Lübeck to Montevideo, Uruguay. Camnitzer studied there from 1953 to 1962 sculpture, architecture and printmaking at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes of the Universidad de la República. In 1957 he received a scholarship from the German government, which enabled him to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. There he studied with H. Kirchner and he was honored in the following year with an Academy Award. In 1961 he received a Guggenheim Fellowship in connection with which he deepened his studies at New York's Pratt Institute. In 1964 he moved to the U.S.. There he was part of the Memorial Foundation for Jewish Culture another scholarship in the years 1965 to 1966 in part. In the following years he taught from 1969, Art at the State University of New York / College at Old Westbury. He now lives in upstate New York.

Work

After training as a graphic Camnitzer developed an autonomous oeuvre as a concept artist, with whom he was invited to participate in exhibitions at the Tate Modern Gallery in London and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Among his best known works include the Leftovers from 1970 and from 1983 /84, the photo series From the Uruguayan Torture Series, which Okwui Enwezor 2002 chose for the Documenta 11.

The written word is one of the preferred means Camnitzers work in the visual arts. A work cycle " Last Words " (2008) consists of a continuous six large poster printing text from the last words of death row inmates.

In some exhibitions Camnitzer invites visitors to participate. His funded by the Spanish National Library project "The Last Book" is created as a collection of written and visual explanations for later generations. Out of concern for the future of the written word and the book, Camnitzer called global from 2007 artists to contribute a book page as a written and visual record of the book culture. 2010, there was The Last Book from more than 680 artistic clashes of different language, orientation and quality. It is mainly issued to key places in the book culture.

Camnitzer is the author of art theory and art history major writings ( cf. ) and professor emeritus of the State University of New York Department of Visual Arts. He was one of the most important supporters in the founding and development of the Museo del Barrio in New York City.
