Lukomir

Lukomir is a small mountain village in central Bosnia and Herzegovina, about 40 kilometers southwest of Sarajevo. With its location at 1455 m Lukomir is the highest settlement in the country and the only one to over 1300 m altitude.

Geography

Lukomir is located in the southern foothills of the Massif Bjelašnica and above the Rakitnica canyon on its north side on the territory of the greater municipality of Konjic. The nearest neighboring Umoljani lies behind a range of hills in the east and is removed with the car about ten kilometers.

History

Due to the Stecci discovered in the municipality and its surroundings ( grave stones), some of which date from the 14th and 15th centuries, going historians believe that Lukomir has been inhabited at least since that time.

In the Bosnian war the place was hardly affected due to its remoteness, but was attacked several times from the other side of the Rakitnica canyon with artillery.

Traffic

By car Lukomir can only be reached from the north and only from April to December. Two unpaved roads connect the village with Konjic in the northwest and in the northeast of Sarajevo. The location right on the here about 800 meters deep gorge Rakitnica there is no road connections south.

However, lead from Lukomir of hiking trails on the edge of the gorge in the neighboring villages and Čuhovići Umoljani, and down into the canyon.

Population

Lukomir is inhabited from spring to autumn; in November, the few mostly elderly residents of the place and go back in April. They operate in the northern poljes grazing. At the last census in 1991 Lukomir had 156 inhabitants, of whom 152 Bosniaks. On the southern outskirts of the village stands a small mosque with wooden minaret that overlooks the canyon.

Tourism

Since the extension of the road to Lukomir 2004, the mountain village has become a popular destination for residents of Sarajevo, tourists, so that the residents can earn by selling simple meals, coffee or cheese to visitors a little extra income. After 2010, a lodge for tourists was built. From the tourism authorities Lukomir is specifically marketed as a lonesome mountain idyll.
