Lunar dynasty

Chandravamsha or Chandramvamshi (Sanskrit चन्द्रवंशी candravaṃśī m., Literally " Moon Dynasty "), even Somavamsha ( सोमवंश somavaṁśa ), is a mythical dynasty in Hinduism. It is divided into two main lines, the Yadava and the Paurava. Even today, various Indian family groups called descendants of this dynasty.

Descent

This lunar dynasty descended from the moon god Chandra, the pedigrees in the Indian scriptures are not specified uniform. His son Budha (" Mercury " ) married Manus daughter Ida. From these originate in the fifth generation Yadu and Puru from the eponymous ancestor of the two lines.

The best known representative of the Yadava family is Krishna, an avatar of the god Vishnu, who according to the legend, there was prince over Dvaraka. The line of Paurava divided later into the competing lines of the Pandava and Kaurava, whose struggles are described in the Indian national epic Mahabharata.

The Sun Dynasty ( Suryavamsha ), however, is descended from Ida's brother Ikshvaku.
