M1 (missile)

The M 1 were the first medium-range ballistic missiles that were stationed on submarines of the French Navy. The independent French development was based on the U.S. UGM -27 Polaris. First experiments were carried out in 1967. As a test vehicle, the conventionally powered submarine Gymnote test was used. The two-stage solid-fuel rockets were made in 1971 as the main armament of the first French nuclear submarine Le Redoutable (S 611 ) ( MSB ) of the Force de frappe in service. The missiles were armed with a nuclear warhead with a thickness of 500 kT. The missiles were only used by another U- boat of the Redoutable class, the Le Terrible (S 612) and in 1974 replaced by the M 2.
